Description: The Norfolk & Western Railway Company (N&W) was a major regional railroad serving the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-western areas of the US. Formed in 1838, it was the product of several hundred railroad mergers, to include such lines as the Nickel Plate, Virginian and Wabash railroads. The N&W served the area from Norfolk, Virginia westward to Kansas City and Omaha, including the major cities of Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The N&W served the area from Norfolk, Virginia westward to Kansas City and Omaha, including the major cities of Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The N&W merged with the Southern Railway System in 1982 to form a mega-railroad, the Norfolk Southern, which stretched this territory south through Atlanta to Jacksonville and New Orleans. In 1999, Norfolk Southern acquired a large portion of the former Conrail system and became one of the two large east-coast railroads. For auction is a rule book entitled "Agreement Between the Norfolk and Western Railway Company and Stationary Firemen and Shop Laborers Employed in the Mechanical Department"; it is dated September 1, 1949. This agreement governs the work of a number of skill positions, to include stationary firemen, shop laborers, turntable operators, coal passers, engine supplymen, shop watchmen, truck operators and engine supplymen, to name just a few. Topics include a definition of the 40-hour week; overtime; call rules; shifts; meal periods; hours of service; emergency service road work; seniority; vacancies; reduction in forces; transfers; work assignments; much more. There is an addendum detailing the vacation agreement and another with the mediation agreement. This rule book measures appx 6 1/4 x 4 inches and contains 32 pages. The cover is a medium-weight cardstock, and the content pages are a mid-quality paperstock. It is unused and in excellent condition-- there are no rips or tears, no writing or markings, no spills or smears, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place.
