Baseball Bat Magic Quiet, unassuming and perhaps the most unpublicized player of his era, Rod Carew is achieving marks and breaking records dating back to the days of the near-legendary Hall of Famer Ty Cobb. The 6' 1", 175-lb in- fielder for the Minnesota Twins was born on a train in Gatun, Panama Canal Zone. His full name is Rodney Cline Carew and he was named for him. doctor that delivered the Growing up in New York City, Carew spent 2½ years in the minor leagues before being called up by the Twins for the 1967 season. He proceeded to bat .297 and was named the AL Rookie-of-the-Year. The next season, the left-handed hitting Carew slipped to 273, but in 1969 he rebounded with a remarkable season. Using his whip-like wrists and precise sense of timing, he won the American League batting crown with a .332 average. That season he also broke one of the oldest records in the book by stealing home seven times, surpassing Cobb's six steals of home in 1915. A consistent player and one of the better glove men in the league, Carew led the league in hitting again in 1972 with a .318 average. He im- proved even more in 1974, rapping out a league-leading 218 base hits while compiling a batting average of .364. In 1975, he hit .359 and led the AL for the 4th consecutive year, an accomplishment second only to Ty Cobb's in the years immediately after World War I. His five batting titles put Carew in the company of Hall of Famers Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Honus Wagner, Ted Williams and Stan Musial as the only batters ever to win five league crowns. He switched to first base in 1976, and again made the All-Star team in his new position.
