Description: 1988 WORLD BOATCRAFT NAUTICAL SAIL SHIP SUSAN DAVIS ART NEW YORKER COVER FC725 DATE OF THIS ** ORIGINAL ** ITEM: 1988SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS/DESCRIPTIVE WORDS: ILLUSTRATOR/ARTIST: Susan Davis, 51, an artist whose whimsical and poignant scenes appeared on nearly 20 covers of the New Yorker magazine and illustrated children's books and features in The Washington Post, died Dec. 20 at her home in Silver Spring. She had a brain tumor. A self-taught artist who worked in oils, watercolors and pastels, Ms. Davis was a familiar figure on the Washington art and publishing scene. In addition to her black-and-white drawings for The Post, which accompanied the gardening columns of the late Henry Mitchell and other articles, she produced murals and large commissioned works. Her art was also reproduced on wrapping paper and greeting cards for companies that included Caspari and Neiman Marcus. In 1993, she was chosen to create posters and limited-edition prints commemorating President Clinton's inauguration. In subsequent years, she did drawings for the official cards and commemorative tiles of Vice President and Tipper Gore. She also created a special Christmas medallion for Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening. Ms. Davis was a close and loving observer of the passing scene--urban, suburban and rural. Beachscapes were a favorite, and for some time she had a studio on Tilghman Island. Washington Post art critic Paul Richard, writing about her work in 1982, described it as "friendly as can be. "No smog befouls her colored skies," he observed; "no sharks lurk in her seas. Lions snarl and roar, hers seem disposed to chat. Her sunbathing fat ladies, bouncy as balloons, but warmed by her affection, do not seem grotesque. Davis never scares us. Even when she paints from life, as she often does, she filters out the fierce." Her drawings often dipped into fantasy, and she was known among illustrators and collectors for her posters and calendars, as well as record jackets. Her New Yorker drawings were included in the collection "Seasons at The New Yorker," published by the National Academy of Design. Others were reproduced in "The Complete Covers of The New Yorker." Her murals of St. Mary's City and Porto Bello were featured in Architectural Digest four years ago. Other works appeared in the Los Angeles Times, American Teacher, American Educator, America Illustrated, Museum & Arts and Yankee magazines. Among the many children's books she illustrated was "Sick-In-Bed Birthday," by Linda Tyler, which won a Children's Choice award. Other books included "The Washington Post Gardening Book" and Sally Quinn's "The Party" She produced posters and paintings for the Honeywell, Toyota, American Express and MCI corporations, Wolf Trap Farm Park and other clients. Ms. Davis was born in Montclair, N.J., and grew up in the Maryland suburbs. She was a graduate of Holy Cross High School and Trinity College in Washington. She began her career as a commercial artist with the Giant Food company 30 years ago. She later was an artist for the Hecht Co. and an art director with the Kal, Merrick and Salan agency. She also did freelance work for Woodward & Lothrop. For 25 years, she painted and drew right-handed. After being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor when she was 50, her right arm became paralyzed. She taught herself to paint left-handed and found that she liked what resulted.
