CSS Teaser: This 80' steam powered converted tugboat gunboat was built in Philadelphia and was purchased by the Virginia Navy in the James River and turned over to the Confederacy in 1962. She was assigned to plant "torpedoes" mines in the James River. She was also a tender for the CSS Virginia. That ironclad destroyed the wooden ships USS Cumberland and USS Congress in March 1862. After the surrender of Norfolk in May 1862, she retired up the James River to Drewry's Bluff with the James River Squadron. After that she became the floating base for a hot air recon balloon. Unfortunately, she was captured on July 4, 1862 after a Union shell blew up her boiler. The USS Maratanza seized the CSS Teaser after the crew was forced to abandon ship. See her web pages for the details of her design, construction, conversion and service history, including battle narratives. Seller has over 50 different Civil War Ship covers.
