Badges of the order of all classes were considered as military awards for specific feats. Cross of the 4th degree at the same time served and a sign of seniority, and since 1861, in such cases, inscriptions began to be placed on it: "25 years" - for the army "18 campaigns" - for the fleet. The signs of the order were divided into large (1 and 2 degrees) and small (3 and 4 degrees) crosses. White enamel cross has on the medallions the Moscow coat of arms and the monogram of the letters SG. The golden diamond-shaped star belongs to both higher degrees.
